Chronic Pelvic Pain Treatment in Newcastle

Chronic pelvic pain in men is a condition characterised by persistent pain or discomfort in the pelvic, perineal, or genital region, often lasting for several months. Symptoms may include pain in the perineum, testicles, penis, or lower abdomen, and may be associated with urinary or sexual symptoms.

The causes of chronic pelvic pain are often complex and may involve a combination of inflammatory, neurological, and functional factors.

At Newcastle Men’s Health Clinic, assessment is led by a consultant urologist, with access to appropriate investigations and a structured approach to diagnosis and management.

Clinical Signs Chronic Pelvic Pain Assessment May Be Appropriate

Chronic pelvic pain may present in different ways and can vary in severity. Assessment may be helpful if you experience:

  • Persistent Pelvic or Perineal Pain:  Pain lasting for several weeks or months affecting the pelvic region.
  • Genital or Testicular Discomfort: Ongoing discomfort in the penis, testicles, or surrounding areas.
  • Pain Associated with Urination or Ejaculation: Symptoms that worsen during or after urination or sexual activity.
  • Urinary Symptoms with Pelvic Pain: Frequency, urgency, or discomfort alongside pelvic pain.
  • Symptoms Not Improving with Initial Treatment: Ongoing symptoms despite previous treatment or reassurance.

A structured assessment helps identify potential contributing factors and guide management.

Evidence-Based Clinical Approach

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is recognised as a complex condition with multifactorial causes, including inflammatory, neurological, and functional components.

Clinical guidelines recommend a structured approach to assessment, which may include:

  • urine and microbiological testing where appropriate
  • imaging such as MRI in selected cases
  • cystoscopy where clinically indicated

At Newcastle Men’s Health Clinic, assessment is led by a consultant urologist, with access to appropriate investigations to exclude underlying pathology and guide treatment.

Management is tailored to the individual and may involve a combination of medical treatment and supportive strategies.

In some cases, investigations such as urine tests, imaging, or cystoscopy may be recommended to exclude underlying conditions.

Antibiotics may be used in selected cases where infection is suspected, but they are not appropriate for all patients

Shockwave therapy has been studied in chronic pelvic pain syndrome and may help improve symptoms in some men, although response varies.
