Prostate Cancer Checks in Newcastle
Prostate conditions become more common with age and may present with urinary symptoms or be detected through blood testing.
A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test can be used as part of a broader assessment of prostate health. However, PSA results need to be interpreted carefully, taking into account age, symptoms, and individual risk factors.
At Newcastle Men’s Health Clinic, we provide a structured prostate assessment service, combining GP-led evaluation with access to advanced imaging and consultant urology where required.
Clinical Signs Prostate Assessment May Be Appropriate
Assessment may be helpful if you:
- Are Over 50: Prostate conditions become more common with increasing age.
- Have Urinary Symptoms: Such as frequency, nocturia, weak stream, or urgency.
- Have a Family History of Prostate Cancer: Particularly in a father or brother.
- Are of Higher-Risk Ethnicity: Men of Black African or Caribbean background have a higher risk.
- Would Like a Prostate Health Check: Even in the absence of symptoms, following discussion of risks and benefits.
A consultation allows for informed decision-making about PSA testing and further assessment.
Evidence-Based Clinical Approach
PSA testing should be interpreted within a clinical context rather than used in isolation.
Assessment includes evaluation of symptoms and individual risk factors, alongside interpretation of PSA results over time. Digital rectal examination (DRE) may be performed where clinically appropriate, although imaging such as multiparametric MRI is often more informative in assessing prostate risk.
Where PSA results or clinical findings require further assessment, multiparametric MRI can be arranged. Imaging is delivered within a structured pathway, with results reviewed in a clinical context and clear guidance provided on next steps.
Where findings are abnormal or uncertain, patients have access to consultant urology review for further assessment and management.
This approach is consistent with recognised guidance, including recommendations from NICE, the European Association of Urology (EAU), and the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a PSA test?
A PSA test is a blood test that measures prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate. Levels can be influenced by a range of factors, not just prostate cancer.
Should I have a PSA test if I have no symptoms?
PSA testing can be considered after discussion of potential benefits and limitations. It is not routinely recommended as a screening test without informed decision-making.
What happens if my PSA is raised?
A raised PSA does not necessarily mean cancer. Further assessment may include repeat testing, clinical review, or imaging such as mpMRI.
What is an mpMRI scan?
Multiparametric MRI is an imaging test used to assess the prostate in more detail and help determine whether further investigation is needed.
Will I need to see a consultant?
Most initial assessments are GP-led. If further investigation is required, including review of imaging results, you will have access to a consultant urologist.
Can I combine this with a general health check?
Yes. Prostate assessment can be combined with a comprehensive men’s health check, which includes a broader evaluation of cardiovascular and metabolic health.
