How Prepucioplasty Works
Prepucioplasty is a foreskin-preserving surgical procedure used to widen a tight foreskin opening. It can be a suitable alternative to circumcision for some men with phimosis (tight foreskin), allowing the foreskin to be retracted more comfortably while keeping it in place.
At Newcastle Men’s Health, prepucioplasty is carried out using techniques designed to minimise discomfort and support a smooth recovery.
The procedure is performed by a Consultant Urologist under local anaesthetic in our minor operations suite, allowing most men to return home the same day.
When Prepucioplasty May Be Appropriate
Prepucioplasty may be considered when a tight foreskin causes problems and conservative measures, such as topical treatment, have not been sufficient. A clinical assessment is needed to confirm whether prepucioplasty is suitable. Situations where it may be appropriate include:

Miss Dockray studied Medicine at the University of Cambridge, graduating with distinction, and completed a master’s in Urology with commendation during her surgical training across the UK. She was subsequently appointed to the Men’s Health fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto — one of North America’s highest-volume centres for male infertility and reconstructive andrology. She has particular expertise in andrology and the surgical management of foreskin and men’s health conditions.
Prior to the procedure, patients undergo a clinical consultation with Miss Dockray to confirm that prepucioplasty is the most appropriate treatment and to discuss the procedure, expected recovery, and potential risks. Follow-up care is provided as part of the clinic’s men’s health service.

How does prepucioplasty differ from circumcision?
Circumcision removes the foreskin, whereas prepucioplasty widens a tight foreskin opening while keeping the foreskin in place. For some men with a tight foreskin, prepucioplasty can be a suitable foreskin-preserving alternative — but it is not appropriate in every case. A clinical assessment is needed to determine which option is most suitable for you.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure itself is typically completed within around 30 to 45 minutes, though the total time at the clinic will be longer to allow for preparation, the procedure, and a short period of recovery before you go home.
What is the typical recovery time?
Many men are able to return to desk-based work within a few days, with more strenuous activity and exercise resumed over the following couple of weeks. Recovery varies between individuals, and you should avoid sexual activity until your surgeon advises it is appropriate. Full healing guidance will be given to you after the procedure.
Will I have stitches?
Prepucioplasty usually involves dissolvable stitches, which do not need to be removed and break down on their own as the area heals. Your surgeon will explain what to expect and how to care for the area during recovery.
What are the potential risks?
As with any surgical procedure, prepucioplasty carries some risks, which may include bleeding, infection, swelling, or discomfort during healing. In a small number of cases, tightness can recur and further treatment may be needed. Your surgeon will discuss the relevant risks and benefits with you fully before you decide whether to proceed, so you can give informed consent.
Is prepucioplasty suitable for everyone with a tight foreskin?
No. Prepucioplasty is suitable for some men with a tight foreskin, but where there is significant scarring — for example from a skin condition such as lichen sclerosus (BXO) — circumcision is often the more appropriate option. The purpose of the consultation is to assess your individual circumstances and recommend the most suitable treatment.
